LIfe In The Middle

Gaining An Abundant Life By Serving Among The Most Dependent Of Life

We are each born with a unique set of strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes it seems those strengths and weaknesses are never defined. We go through out life not really the best or the worst that we can be. We are immersed in mediocrity.

Anyone who has ever been a parent knows what it is like when you hold your new baby in your arms and wonder what great things he or she will do when they grow up. Much of those dreams get set aside, and often we are satisfied if we can just get them into adulthood without costing us too much money or embarrassment.

I have often wondered how it is that we set aside those hopes and desires for that tiny little one after such a short period of time. I am sure that we don’t want Jehovah, Mohammad, Buddha, God, Jesus, or whatever deity we bow down to, to give up on us as quickly. I am sure we think that they will be with us always. They will always have their hand extended to lift us up.

If this is so, should we not extend our hand to others? Isn’t the care of our children one of the most important responsibilities we are charged with? There is no more important service for parents.

As many of you know, I work in a large neonatal intensive care unit. I see babies on a regular basis that are starting their life experience exposed to alcohol, drugs, abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, and horrendous birth defects. I am sure the Creator looks down on these little ones and weeps.

We do everything we can to give them a medical chance to be on an equal footing with their peers, but we cannot give them a stable home, and loving parents. Some of them will end up in foster homes, and be returned with fractured skulls and broken arms. Some will end up dead. Others will struggle through childhood, and we will see those innocent faces turn into the future juvenile delinquent or adult criminal. Then maybe for a moment we will wonder, did I contribute to this individual’s character development?

If cradled in your arms is a new little life ,I hope you look seriously at this little person and realize what a tremendous impact you have on their life. I hope you have the ability to chart a course for this child that will help him be the best that he can be. Hopefully, whoever you ‘re praying to for help and guidance will bless you, and comfort you. It will not be forgotten that you offered yourself for this, one of the least of them, and in return your life will be abundantly enriched. Think about this. Until later..Colleen
